What is leadership?
Leadership is the ability to energize, empower and move people toward a desired objective.
Leadership is an art AND it is a science.
Leadership is inborn AND it can be learned.
Leadership is messy, nuanced, challenging, tiring, energizing and it's a high calling.
Leaders make things happen that others say are impossible.
Leaders are merchants of dreams and hopes and aspirations and they are imagineers of what might be.
Leaders are all this and more.
Leadership may be the toughest thing in the world and it changes the world. What was once just a hope, dream or theory is developed by a leader who gathers a team and energizes them toward accomplishing the 'impossible'.
No great thing has ever been accomplished without a leader who was willing to take a huge risk to be made a fool or to fail face first publicly. There is simply no way to eliminate all risk and lead. If you are totally risk averse then leadership is not your calling.
With great power comes great responsibility to use your gifts for the good of others and not for their harm.
The bigger your leadership gifts the more responsible you are to use those gifts to change the world for the better.

I love to share what I'm learning and have learned in the school of hard knocks and formally with rising leaders.
Leaders have intuition and street smarts and internal navigational abilities that energizes and mobilizes their teams profitably.

It's tough to measure whether a person is a leader or not until you look around and see if anyone is following them. If there are people who follow willingly and for no pay then the person may be a leader.
A real leader knows when to rally the troops and when to let them rest.
He/she knows at the gut level what to do and when to do it to take the next 'hill'.
