This is still the land of Opportunity!
12 Criteria for Choosing your Next Step to a better future.
As a pastor, keynote speaker, trainer, and sports coach for my boys I run into all kinds of people. Some of the people I run into are doing quite well and enjoying life. But, I'm stunned by how many people I meet right here in the heart of the United States who are miserable. They feel stuck in their job or simply don't like their job or boss. Or, the bigger issue with the big shifts in the U.S. economy lately is that many are displaced and misplaced. They are simply not enjoying the levels of income and job satisfaction that they did a few years ago. Simply said, the 'misery index' around the United States is still pretty high.
Just a few days ago I ran into these 'miserable' situations:
1. A vibrant executive who makes a lot of money was confined to a hospital bed and her # 1 concern was that she was using up all of her vacation time and wouldn't be able to take off for a decent vacation with her family later this year. Now that's tough. She make a lot of money but has no time control.
2. A friend was experiencing chest pains and spent some in the E.R. to be evaluated. His top concern was how much was the hospital bill is gonna be. Despite the serious diagnosis and potential life threatening nature of his heart condition he was pumped that he'd have several weeks off of work. That's a tough way to get a vacation! He simply hates his job and he's not paid nearly as much as he used to make so he's feeling pretty depressed. Being 'stuck' like that makes a man feel really depressed and even worthless. We are not meant to live with someone 'elses' thumb on our head! We have it in our DNA to want to climb, to achieve and to be the 'masters of our own destiny'. When we aren't being true to that wiring we reap the damage to our self worth and to our future possibilities.
3. I have 4 close friends who have either lost their homes lately or are about to. They simply are not making ends meet. No question we can all learn to harness the power of our money better, but the pain of losing your home is pretty cutting. It's not enough just to make more $$, we also have to manage it well and become wiser. With the proper coaching we can do both.
There is no question that times are changing. That change has been extremely painful for some and has brought opportunities to others. The reality is that you have the freedom to create a new business, to pursue your own dream and to enjoy life on your own terms.
If you keep on doing what you've been doing then you're gonna keep on getting what you've been getting or less! So, it's time to get moving! It's time to step out on faith and try something new. This is the path I'm recommending that you consider!
Step One
I believe it all starts with God and his purposes for you and so it makes sense to seek Him and His plan. I believe the best way to discover that plan is to seek God and to learn from the Bible about what His plans are for the world and for His people. As you learn more there you'll begin to get a sense of why He dreamed, designed and crafted you. It also helps to find a great Christ centered church to be a part of and develop spiritual friendships there with people who are growing in their faith and in their sense of living on purpose.
Step Two
Learn more about how you are wired and think deeply about what you'd most like to do with your life. Goal setting programs and apps are abundant, so just choose one you like and then work with it until you have a vital sense of what your dreams aer. Be willing to submit your dreams to His higher plans and purposes and you'll do just fine.
Step Three
Take the creative risks necessary to get going. You may fail, true. But, you may succeed!
Step Four
Consider starting your own business or enterprise or 'franchising' an enterprise that's already in motion. In times like these this may be your absolute best choice. This is where you may want to bring me into the picture with you to hear you out and to help you put together a game plan to pursue your God-centered heart's desires. Folks that are part of Phos Community Church can grab some time with me pro bono. If you're not part of that community then I'd be glad to chat with you briefly to see if I may be able to help. Either way, complete the form below and let me know if you'd like to talk more. If it looks like I can then we'll discuss the coaching fees at that point.
Jeff's 12 Business Criterion.
When I'm considering business options here are the questions I ask about the enterprise:
1. Does it help people?
2. Will others benefit from this enterprise? That is, can I help others grow and succeed as well? Or is strictly about me and my success?
3. Can I build a strong residual [ongoing income that doesn't require me to keep 'flogging the dog' and 'punching the clock' ] income over the next 5 years with a reasonable amount of effort, work and sacrifice?
4. Will I be able to honor my full time work commitments and do an excellent job while I'm putting this together?
5. Will I still have time and energy to coach my son's sports teams? More to the point, will I be able to enjoy my wife and family and friends if I do this or will I be so consumed with it that I'll lose touch with the whole reason I started which was to bless them and have even more time with them.
6. Does this have potential 'global' growth potential?l There's power in numbers and the numbers are definitely with India and China and Brazil. I may not be able to get into the international sector immediately, but I sure want to be there eventually.
7. Can I create a 'drop dead' walk away income stream that my wife and kids can use as a platform to help them into their futures--even if I'm not around?
8. Will this enterprise make me 'time & space' bound? I cannot stand the idea of being confined to one small space doing just one thing and I don't like the notion of having to 'punch a clock'. Therefore, I'm not a big fan of 'bricks and mortar' opportunities where I have to report to certain address and punch a clock and then perform a set of routine monkey-functions to make a dollar bill. (this is a very personal quirk. you may not share this hang up and you could still do quite well! You just have more tolerance for routine than I do!)
9. 'Serve the masses; live with the classes. When you serve a lot of people your chances of doing well in your enterprise go way up. I want an opportunity to serve lots of people and see them succeed in every way.
10. Will I be able to be true to my first and highest callings as the Lead Pastor of Phos Community Church, as a daddy and as a husband?
11. Will this matter 100 years from now? That is, does it have long term potential to go on and to keep on benefiting others?
12. Will I enjoy and benefit from the interactions I'll have as part of this enterprise. Joy is vital to true success.
When those sorts of things stack up then I get pretty excited about the possibility of moving forward with the enterprise. Those are just my own priorities showing through so they certainly don't have to be yours! However, it's vital to know what you want a business or enterprise to do for you before you get started and then to structure your involvements so that you wind up having the lifestyle you dream of instead of a nightmare when you get things cranked up!
I have found an enterprise that I believe fits those 12 criterion and I'd be honored to take a few minutes to show you what we are putting together. Complete the contact form below and I'll see if we can work out a time to have a video conference via Google+ or Skype.
