THESE THREE ARM BANDS MEAN THAT I FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT! I WAS THERE FOR EVERY SINGLE MOMENT WHEN MY SON PLAYED BASEBALL THIS WEEKEND!
I don't know about you, but I've blown it a LOT when it comes to being fully present at pivotal moments as my children grew up. Back in the day I was so hard charging in my pursuits to build an enterprise and lead a large ministry that I put my family on the back burner for years. I missed so much and I wish I could turn the clock back and just sit with them more and enjoy every conversation and every replay of all of those Disney movies that my beautiful daughter invited me to enjoy, but most of the time I was 'way to busy' with things that 'were so vitally important' to Lord knows who now. I blew it bad and it's time I can never get back. It breaks my heart to think how much I missed out on -- and my sweet daughter did too.
I nearly had a break down in a bookstore where Bob McGrath, of Sesame Street was doing a book signing and singing some of those classic Sesame Street songs that took me back to my childhood and somehow I came to my senses and stopped the madness and quit my side hustle and refocused my life to a more sane pace. That break down created a breakthrough that led me to a lot of soul searching about success truly looked like for me and it included much more time spent with my children and my wife. I realized late, but, not too late that time and truly being there with those I love and building memories are what matter most to me. So, I made a purpose filled course correction and reset the 'successometer' in my life to more accurately represent what truly matters to me.
So, this weekend of watching lots and lots of baseball with Julie represented a victory of sanity and of choosing to lean into my definition of success. And, this weekend I got to see our son pitch a great game. Imagine if I hadn't had that breakdown in the bookstore -- I probably would have been off chasing some 'lesser thing' and would have likely missed the whole show this weekend.
I don't know how many more trips I have around the sun, but for this moment I captured memory after memory after memory with Kaleb and Julie. And, I'll treasure these three silly arm bands in a journal as trophies of a decision and course correction made a long way back there that has made all the difference.
So, here's to you working out your definition of success and collecting more arm bands that matter to you.
ALL THE BEST!
