“Most people spend most of their time on defense - in reactive mode; in playing with the cards they got instead of moving to a different table with different cards. Instead of seeking to change other people they are willing to be changed. And, part of the arc of what I’m trying to teach is —everyone who can hear this has more power than they think they do and the question is what are you going to do with that power because it comes with a responsibility — right out of Spider Man. But, that responsibility is your gonna make change happen or you’re gonna ignore it. And, if you make change happen, that’s on you.” Seth Godin*
When I heard Seth Godin say this I had to replay this section over and over until I could type it out word for word. It's so good and Seth's idea of picking a different table and a different deck of cards is such a powerful concept. I don't think that the notion of 'changing tables' crosses most of our minds. But, I wish it did more often! We should stick with things that are hard and play our cards as best we can when we are living out our calling or living into a mission that fits our highest best contribution to the world. Sometimes it's just hard and that's okay. When you are 'on mission' and living into your highest best self making a positive contribution then stick it out! [ for a great example of this, study the life of William Wilbeforce who helped break the grip of slavery in Great Britain. He had to stick with it and play his cards for dozens of years, indeed, he invested his life for a great cause. And, that is a fantastic example of when it's appropriate to stay at your table and play your cards. HOWEVER, so many Americans and many of my friends are settling for lives of little or no contribution that brings them ZERO joy or purpose. That's simply not okay. You have too much to offer the world and God designed and dreamed you into existence to help carry out His purposes for the world. It's not okay to stay stuck or to live below your calling. And, the great news, is that most of us can move to another table! What we lack most of the time is courage! I write a lot and talk a lot about courage to make changes and so does my daughter, Evelyn Fuson. If you're a young lady with a higher calling you'd do yourself a big favor to check out EvelynFuson.com and learn more about and from her. She is living into her highest calling and loves helping others do the same. Here's to you changing tables!! Go get 'em....
